@David Horváth Maybe switch to Unity 2D for the time being. It is
working very well for me. Only the spread and desktop switcher
animations are a bit sluggish and with some visual corruption, but other
than that performance is awesome. I'm also using an HD4200 with the
latest Catalyst 11.6.

The problem in general seems to be that screen updates are very very
slow, as if something is limiting the frame-rate to some 2-4fps (even
with no sync to vblank options activated). One good example is inkscape.
Try opening it and doing some panning. With Unity it is very very
choppy. Same thing with Unity 2D or Ubuntu Classic without effects and
it's completely smooth.
