Message #18853
[Bug 783498] Re: add per-window ("window-centric") window management to Unity (launcher and/or compiz)
There are certain applications that should be handled in a "windows-centric" way :
- terminal windows
- editors like gvim
- some users might also prefer windows-centricity for office documents
Please take into account this scenario :
- one terminal with a ssh connection
- one terminal for watching a log file
- one terminal for editing source code
- one terminal for compile+execute
Handling all these 4 terminal windows as a single "application" is a very bad idea because each window has a very separate purpose in the workflow. In fact 4 windows are DIFFERENT applications from the user's point of view :
- ssh client
- editor
- bash
- tail -f
These are different applications that only happen to be executed withing the same "terminal".
The user will want to minimize/maximize/close any of the 4 windows independently .
The next release of Unity will need to offer the ability to control
multi-windows applications in a comfortable way.
