I get the same error. Sometimes 3 times per hours. To me it seams to be affected by keypresses, as it often happens while I work with VIM or while I am closing it with ":x"
While compiz freezes I can move the mouse cursor and change to the console and restart compiz with "sudo killall -9 compiz"

Linux eris 2.6.38-10-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 28 15:07:17 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
DualCoreCPU with nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.04" without Unity activated

It worked all fine in Ububtu 10.04.

Any hint where/how to search would be helpful
