If disabling Sync To VBlank fixes the performance problem then you're
seeing bug 763005.

You can test this by installing package "compizconfig-settings-manager" and then:
  System Settings... >
  CompizConfig Settings Manager >
  OpenGL >
  untick "Sync To VBlank"

Please try this.
