[Bug 783498] Re: add per-window ("window-centric") window management to Unity (launcher and/or compiz)

Not sure if this thread is really the best place for this -- but
something that REALLY bothers me on this is how hard it makes to do
research, or any kind of task that involves moving data from one
application from another.

So, for instance, I'm currently doing a project that involves a lot of
cutting and pasting between a firefox window and a text document. In
the old days I would have sized the two windows side-by-side (and
possibly used a window manager that allows me to do this very quickly),
and then moved fluidly back and forth between them.

Now switching between applications ruins this setup, because other
firefox/emacs windows obscure my view of the complementary window when I
switch applications. If I try using Libreoffice, the effect is even
worse, because every document is necessarily opened in a separate window
there.

If Unity isn't the place to fix this, what kind of utility ought to be
developed? I've been using Unity now for about 2 months, hoping to get
used to it; and I like many bits of the experience, but this single
feature is greatly reducing my work efficiency and I'm wondering if I'll
just have to switch to Mint, or Kubuntu, in order to fix it.
