I'm having the exact symptoms as described initially in this bug. 
I've seen the same problem both with nouveau as well as with nvidia proprietary 280.13 in Oneric, note that I haven't been seriously testing that bit, I've just been switching between the two for the last 2-3 months as a result of problems described in this bug. 
I've got Nvidia GT9800 .
I'm giving Daniel van Vugt's patches a go, just installed 
compiz=1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6vv5
compiz-core=1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6vv5
compiz-gnome=1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6vv5

libdecoration0=1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6vv5
unity=4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv4
unity-common=4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv4

I'll have to wait for at least 4-5 days until I can confirm if these
packages resolved or improved these problems.
