[Bug 888039] Re: Gradual degradation in desktop performance.

I just wanted to chime in here. I've been searching for this bug on
Launchpad for some time ! There are so many compiz / unity bugs, there
seems to be a lot of noise on each bug report with intersecting
symptoms. This makes it so hard to really identify and isolate a
particular bug ! Anyway, I wanted to provide my own data about this bug.

I want to stress that my experience seems to be like that of Chauncellor
and Peter Huwe above.

To recap:
With a fresh boot and login, there is a nice snappy desktop with compiz effects; at this time, one wouldn't think there is anything wrong. After time however, the desktop becomes sluggish.

I investigated with top. I consistently saw compiz cpu usage climb; it
is important to note that memory usage does not seem to climb, just CPU
usage ! So I ran

top -b | grep compiz >> outfile

I let this run for 24-36 hours on one machine with Oneiric, and on
another machine with Natty. Both machines are up to date for their
respective distros, and both machines are using nvidia cards and the
nvidia provided driver. Finally both machines are running TwinView.

I parsed the data in outfile and made these plot with matlab. I am
working on some more tests and documentation for each machine, but the
nature of this bug takes time.
