I should add that if I shutdown my Natty box, reboot into the Oneiric
partition, then I get the same previous results: a linearly increasing
CPU usage with compiz. So, it is not machine-dependent.

Finally, on an Oneiric install with the same nvidia hardware, but not
running TwinView, I have not seen this degradation. I am working on
further documenting that test at the moment. Maybe its there, but has a
smaller slope ?
