Same problem here on my laptop:

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce 9800M GT] (rev a2)

1) Desktop freezes after a while, not very long, could not even install synaptic package
   - both Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D

2) After hard reboot, installed some packages (ssh to be able to connect from remote) from a Virtual Console,
a was switching to immed. after login screen showed up.
After some time of installation:
As soon as I switched to where I assumed graphics, frozen again.
No Ctrl-Alt-Fx any more, seams like dead, but ...
ssh from remote works!

3) WIth my situation the compiz experiment requested earlier is
pointless, since no compiz, no metacity yet, and freeze on lightdm.

Here a strange excerpt from /var/log/syslog, which I do not understand without studying Kernel code, however, maybe
somebody may know:
