I always thought that it was the Nouveau driver that was causing my
laptop to overheat on Ubuntu. However, after using GNOME Shell for the
last 48 hours, I am surprised at how much lower the temperatures are.
Unity seems to cause my laptop to quickly become too hot to operate
resulting in major performance loss, and ultimately shutting off. The
Nouveau driver doesn't have great power management, but seeing as GNOME
Shell and GNOME Fallback work just fine, I believe Unity is the issue. I
remember temperatures were too high on Oneiric using the NVIDIA blob as
well.

When I use the NVIDIA blob on Ubuntu 10.04 I typically idle at about 50
to 55 degrees celcius. The Nouveau driver on Precise typically idles at
about 70 degrees, and eventually keeps climbing (over 95 degrees) until
the laptop shuts off. This is quite a problem due to the major
performance loss and lack of reliability. While testing GNOME Shell, I'm
able to use the laptop throughout the day with acceptable temperatures
typically ranging from 55 to 65 celcius, and sometimes reaching 70
degrees after hours of use. It usually only takes about 30 minutes use
before major overheating on Unity.

The GPU in question is the NVIDIA Geforce 8400m GS with 512mb.
