When upgrading a system to profile the problem! Preferences ~/.gconf and
~/.config changed, but Unity is not taught this "difficult" case. In my
case the problem in ~/.config/?, only after removal of Unity has
started...

backup/remove: 
.cache
.compiz
.compiz-1
.gconf
.config
.gnome2
.gnome2_private
