This affects me too. I find that if you repeatedly click on maximize,
eventually (on the 4th or 5th click), the maximization will "stick". Not
ideal, but a "workaround" of sorts :)

I'm slightly concerned that Ubuntu is officially deprecating the notion
of "focus follows mouse" and therefore won't fix this. After all, it is
not possible to select focus follows without installing the non-standard
config-compiz.
