Message #35748
[Bug 988079] Re: Much slower OpenGL frame rates with unityshell loaded, than plain compiz
For Nvidia users the ONLY way to get a responsible experience in 3D apps
games is to enable
composite -> "unredirect fullscreen windows"
it fixes ALL performance issues - regardless of the ' Sync To Vblank'
setting ... It's the same speed as kde (with /without desktop effects),
xfce, lxde, etc
If you are getting a slow speed (and have Nvidia)
Out the box as well as the speed of fps being 1/2 of what it should I
was getting weird graphic (lagging) issues
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1012401
Enabling "unredirect fullscreen windows" in compiz settings fixes
everything - the speed, the issues, it is the ONLY way I have seen
unity3D to be usable....
However one word of warning - enabling that option can make Unity3D not
start when you re-login...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/980663
At present I would advise all Nvidia users to avoid Unity3D / Compiz if
you ever want to play a 3d game... Unity/Compiz needs to be fixed for
Nvidia user asap (I really fear the bugs will give Linux a bad name for
gaming..)
Kde,lxde, xfce, cinammon - none of these DE's have these issues btw... Kde
has 'suspend desktop effects on fullscreen apps' and gnome 3 seems to
automatically do the same...
