[Bug 1031612] Re: Compiz causes unity to freeze using Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530

Thanks for the prompt response Daniel. I've done some fiddling in the
meantime. Here's what I think and why.

I'm no longer sure it's compiz that's at fault, but suspect Unity 3D.
Here's why.

1. I edited

/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu-2d.session

to reflect

DefaultProvider-windowmanager=compiz

2. I logged in under Unity 2D

3. No flickering, freezes or compz crashing while using the dash search
feature

Maybe things crashing and freezing under Unity 3d, suggests an issue is
with Unity 3D (not compiz). So far, no problems with this set-up.

I'll put this workaround through its paces for a few days on a
production machine and tag this bug invalid if issues don't arise as a
result of this new hack using straight compiz while logged in via Unity
2D. I'll have to file a bug against Untiy 3D, too, because a successful
use of straight compiz (logging in via Unity 2D) points to Unity 3D
being at fault.

If this configuration fails, I'll run your script.

Source of hack
I found the it on askubuntu somewhere. I've lost the link since then, but there's this one that says the same stuff:
