Yeah, that was a bust. I didn't get a crash or freeze running compiz
from a Unity  2D session, but all of a sudden (from what looks like
compiz crashing because of a flicker) my apps visibly disappeared
--although I could see the app menu change to reflect them (apps were
there, just couldn't see them). A duplicate app menu appeared, too,
although only the top one was functional.
