In my experience, the NVIDIA driver is the most CPU-hungry of all the
graphics drivers. So that won't help.

I have similar performance problems on a very slow machine (not using NVIDIA). On that system, I use this to speed up the rendering:
CCSM > Workarounds > Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint = ON

However that's not ideal. We will be delivering a better performance
boost in compiz 0.9.8.0 when Ubuntu 12.10 is released.
