[Bug 1046542] [NEW] removing second monitor leaves windows mapped off-screen

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm using a laptop (Lenovo T420, intel graphics) with an external
monitor. When I remove the laptop from the dock, Displays correctly
shows that I now have just the internal monitor active.

However, all existing windows from the external monitor stay mapped to
positions off the screen and cannot be activated. This is obviously
annoying when going into meetings etc.

1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:	12.04

2)
$ apt-cache policy unity
unity:
  Installed: 5.14.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 5.14.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 5.14.0-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     5.10.0-0ubuntu6 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages

3) Expected:
- have external monitor attached to laptop, extending the desktop to both screens
- remove external monitor (remove laptop from dock)
- all existing windows should be moved to the internal screen so the apps can be accessed

4) What happens:
 - have external monitor attached to laptop, extending the desktop to both screens
- remove external monitor (remove laptop from dock)
- app windows that were on the external monitors are still mapped into those coordinates (I assume) and cannot be chosen.
