Resolution:
I had the problem on a Thinkpad x201.   The underlying cause was actually a file corruption in the packages.

I ran
debsums -s

One of the packages which was corrupted was
gnome-screensaver

Reinstalling gnome-screensaver (and several other packages) fixed the
problem.
