One workaround that seems to work for me under mplayer2 is to add
option:

-vo vdpau:queuetime_windowed=0:queuetime_fs=0:fps=-1

(This is on Unity3d, Compiz, and nvidia driver 295.49. No disabling sync
to vbank required.)
