Updated from quantal-proposed on Intel sandybridge graphics, went to the
youtube clip via guest account -> no tearing.

directly to the screen means compiz has no control over the window and

Check the settings of the application running fullscreen. It should have an option called something like "sync to vblank" which you can enable. If not, use a different app.
