I think the problem with windows appearing white is different than what
you just described. The problem you've identified is definitely worth
looking into though. I think its because unity clears the bounding shape
of windows when they are minimized.

I've got some code somewhere to make it not do that, now that the
relevant bug in compiz that made us to do that is no longer a problem.

Would you be willing to compile and install a custom branch of unity to
test?
