[Bug 1258167] Re: Compiz - unusually high CPU usage on Ubuntu 13.10

You system seems to be falling back to software rendering causing high
CPU load. You XOrg logs also state that "Failed to load module "intel"
(module does not exist, 0)" and you don't seem to have an Intel driver
installed at all. You also seem to have some experimental graphics
driver packages installed from XOrg Edgers PPA.

You should try to do the following:
1) Purge the experimental graphics drivers using ppa-purge (you might have to re-add the edgers PPA to perform the purging)
2) Install the proper drivers. I can't really tell which packages you need as I have no idea which packages you have installed and how you have been able reach this situation. xserver-xorg-video-intel could be a good place to start (other package I have on an Intel system is xserver-xorg-video-all which should install all required drivers).

You can test for 3D acceleration by running command
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p. Anyways, if that doesn't help, you
might need to reinstall your system.

As for the bug, software rendering is performed in the CPU (instead of
GPU) so it causes an increase in CPU usage which is quite high in Compiz
(Unity and Compiz are quite heavy as Unity has a lot of effects and
Compiz is responsible for drawing the entire screen). Thus I'm marking
this bug as invalid. If you see your system falling back to software
rendering after you have fixed the issues or reinstalled your system,
please report a new bug about invalid GPU detection.

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid
