It really looks like a fix is not coming for this.  I've remapped the
ubuntu menu key from "super" to "ctrl-super" in compizconfig-settings-
manager so that I can use the windows key in my VMs without it
triggering the overlay.

It's not ideal, but it's enough to allow me to get on with my work for
now.
