I resolved this issue using the esokrarkose tip (comment #11):

dconf write /com/canonical/unity/minimize-slow-duration 3000

kernel 3.13.0-30-generic, Ubuntu 14.04, Unity and Nvidia driver version
331.67 (card is a 240GT 512MB DDR3)
