All was cool with 12.04. I should never have upgraded but there you.
nice top shows compiz and Xorg with cpu utilization in the 30s. Very
unusable. Grrrr!!!!

I have the following from the lshw command:

    description: Mini Tower Computer
    product: OptiPlex GX270

If any other details are required then please let me know.
