I am pretty sure I identified the issue.
1. I did a clone of my partition and reset compiz && unity as follow:
dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
setsid unity
2. I tested openings many instances of Shotwell Viewer by right-clicking Open With-->Shotwell Viewer (for 30 pictures)
3. When changing the value: Place Windows-->Placement Mode-->Cascade the bug appears each time
4. When putting back the default value: "Smart" the bug disappears when doing the action mentioned at point 2.

For now, I set the value to the default "Smart" and everything is fine.
