I have almost the same behavior with 16.04.3. It doesn't log me out but restarts Unity.
Freshly installed 16.04.3 runs normally. After installing updates Unity crashes exactly like in the OP. Same compiz segfault at 0 ip (...) error 4 in i965_dri.so (...) with slightly different addresses.


In low graphics mode it is a bit better but not completely gone.

As for hovering over the sidebar, it takes a half a second before Unity
crashes, I suspect it happens when it tries to show the tooltip.
