Title:
Nautilus loses keyboard selection when opening a directory with a
single item (Ubuntu 24.04)
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Status in nautilus source package in Noble:
Confirmed
Bug description:
**Description:**
When using Nautilus (Gnome Files) in Ubuntu 24.04, if the user navigates via keyboard into a directory that contains exactly one file or folder, the selection is lost. This makes it impossible to interact with the item using the Enter key or arrow keys, effectively breaking keyboard navigation. The only workaround is to manually press "Tab" to focus the single item.
This issue does not occur in:
- Ubuntu 22.04
- Ubuntu 24.10
- Ubuntu 25.04
**Steps to Reproduce:**
1. Open Nautilus.
2. Navigate to a directory that contains exactly one file or folder.
3. Use the keyboard (arrow keys + Enter) to open that directory.
4. Observe that no item is selected.
**Expected Behavior:**
The single item should automatically be selected, allowing continued navigation with keyboard shortcuts.
**Actual Behavior:**
The selection is lost, and no item is focused. The Enter key and arrow keys do not function unless "Tab" is pressed first.
