I should note here that the file is still setguid shadow, but my
authentication is  NIS/yp which restricts responses to UID<1000 for
security, hence why this broke for me. On non network-authentication
systems this is probably working fine

Bug description:
  setuid root is missing from /sbin/unix_chkpwd in libpam-modules-
  bin=1.5.3-5ubuntu5 and libpam-modules-bin=1.5.3-5ubuntu5.4 preventing
  things such as the cinnamon lockscreen from unlocking.
