I did not since I was not getting these error messages in dmesg, and the
problem looked more at PAM level, but no... It's even before launching
the greeter.

But indeed the error was also
 ago 11 07:21:48 oracular unix_chkpwd[1869]: could not obtain user info (gdm-greeter)

So, adjusting the profile worked, although I got some issues after updating it:
 - Doing a manual update of gdm3/gnome-session from apt: The system rebooted automatically without user request
 - Once restarted with GDM the VM resolution does not adjust anymore to the window size
 - When my session is started the orca screen reader is always enabled (I never enabled it myself)
   + The option is not flagged as active in gnome-shell a11y settings or g-c-c
   + In order to disable it I need to toggle twice the screen reader setting
   + Once deactivated, logging out and in again makes the problem to be there again
