Message #05863
[Bug 2121222] [NEW] boltd 0.9.8 crashes repeatedly with SIGABRT in getrandom() on Ubuntu 25.04 (HP ZBook Power 16 G11, NHI PCI ids 0x1668/0x1669)
Public bug reported:
On Ubuntu 25.04 (plucky) with bolt 0.9.8-1, the boltd daemon crashes
several times per day with SIGABRT in getrandom().
Hardware:
- HP ZBook Power 16 G11 laptop
- USB4/Thunderbolt controllers with NHI PCI IDs 0x1668 and 0x1669
- A Satechi USB-C hub is connected to the Type-C/USB4 port, with an HDMI monitor attached through the hub.
Symptoms:
- Frequent "internal error" pop-ups appear, about 3–4 times a day.
- System logs show repeated messages:
"udev: failed to determine if uid is stable: unknown NHI PCI id '0x1668'"
"udev: failed to determine if uid is stable: unknown NHI PCI id '0x1669'"
- `systemctl status bolt` shows the service aborting with SIGABRT and being restarted by systemd.
- Crash reports in /var/crash/_usr_libexec_boltd.0.crash confirm SIGABRT in getrandom().
Notes:
- I regularly update my system (apt upgrade when prompted), so the system and services are up-to-date.
- I have not run `apt full-upgrade` manually.
Expected result:
- boltd should run reliably and not crash, even with these newer NHI PCI IDs and a common USB-C hub/monitor setup.
Actual result:
- boltd aborts several times daily and triggers apport crash reports.
