My best guess is a config in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
How that may have happened is that if mhalano had modified /etc/gdm3/custom.conf prior to the update they would have got a merge conflict on pkg upgrade and possibly resolved that incorrectly. They stated:

so we're not seeing the configuration that was in-place for this
behaviour to happen.

I patched gdm to not accept a broken displayserver configuration
anymore.

Bug description:
  I restarted my machine today, and it was odd how long took to GDM appears. For some reason it seems it was in a crash loop. Normally after the boot it appears turning on my external display, and than appears the GDM. But this time it entered in a loop turning on and off my external display.
  I can say that because appears an OSD written "HDMI 2" when it turns on the display.
  I hope the logs can give you more details about it.
