[Bug 2081281] Re: gnome terminal and other apps freezes for about 30 seconds
I was experiencing these same issues, and the workarounds mentioned in
the askubuntu.com thread also fixed things for me. I also noticed system
settings was reporting "no audio devices detected". I may have found the
root cause, at least for me. As described at
https://askubuntu.com/a/1555952/915053, removing /etc/pipewire (which is
allegedly an old, defunct config file---I can't vouch for if or when I
made it), resolved all these issues and allowed my speakers to be
detected, even after reverting the workarounds.

Bug description:
After I did a release upgrade from 22.04 LTS to 24.04.1 LTS some GUI operations lead to a freezing app. I first observed it in gnome-terminal when clicking the plus sign to open another tab. Another example is gnome-control-center. If klick to open the control center help page, the control center freezes. And here is another example. In firefox if I want to fill out a html form, opening a drop down item lets freeze firefox for a while.
All examples highlight a infobox asking, if I want to wait for the app to respond or kill it.
I tried it using X11 or Wayland. Both show the same beavior. I also
switched to another desktop manger (from gdm to sddm) but the behavior
is the same. I created a new user but also the behavior is the same.
I downloaded a live image of Ubuntu Studio and started it from a usb
stick, so all was fine.
I guess the problem is in the deep of the system, maybe the kernel,
but I do not have the knowledge to investigate it.
