Hi,

Pay attention to the fact that the Ubuntu 10.10 is having some issues
with many video cards, namely NVidia and ATI, from what I read not
with Intel. But maybe you should try, for example with a live cd, the
ubuntu 10.04, which I, and most of the people started, to use with our
Vostro 3300. I never had problems, although I have an NVidia video
card.

Another thing that you have to take care is that Intel video cards
have problems when you have external screens (side by side) + effects
(compiz). I have this problem with another laptop, the horizontal
resolution of both screens is more than the supported by the video
card. My solution is to put the "on top" of each other, which works
nice. I am not sure if this can work for you, but you can try.
