- gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason. killing gnome-panel did
- not make it reappear, although sticky notes disappeared and then
- reappeared. after restarting gdm, and thus losing my whole login
- session, the panels were present again.

being "put to sleep," in the case of a multimonitor setup where the
external monitor is active and the built-in laptop display is turned
