Re: [Bug 587607] After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 64bit sometimes gdm doesn't start

The bug seems gone in 11.04, but I have changed the graphic driver from
NOUVEAU to the NVidia blob.
I think I didn't change the default driver after installing 10.04

I will download 11.10 alpha and try the live cd (I cannot do a full install
because it would cause an huge disruption)

Title:
After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 64bit sometimes gdm doesn't start

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gdm

Sometimes (more or less once every 3 boots, but sometimes keeps happening for few times in a row) the GDM service doesn't start and Ubuntu displays the text mode login prompt.
When this happens the splash screen doesn't appears, but if I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE then the splash screen that indicates the shutdown appears.

When the text mode login prompt appears I can login and I can launch
GDM with "sudo service gdm start", and the service starts normally and
the graphic login screen is shown.

The problem is new to 10.04 since with 9.10 the gdm service started
  correctly every time.
