In my oppinion favorite contacts and 'appeare offline' are two different things and you cannot use the same function that.
I've always used favorite contacts to see directly, when my favs come online, because they appeare on the top of the roster. But now this group is always closed, because i don't want to appear 16 offline contacts in front of the first online one. I've unmarked nearly all favorite contacts again and this function became really useless to me.

Please undo this and instead of using the same option add another one
"Show offline".

I want the old functionality of favorite contacts back, and i think there are a lot other who would apreciate this, too.

  Binary package hint: empathy

  In a freshly upgraded Natty, the favorite contacts always appear in
  the list, even if they are offline. In Maverick, they were hidden when
  offline, just like the other contacts. I don't see why they are always
  displayed, maybe it's useful in some cases, but on our Jabber network,
  it's not.

  The expected behavior would be :

  -to hide them also
  -or to give the option to make them always visible
