[Bug 826089] Re: gnome-shell writes to ~/.gconf/apps/metacity/general & affects Workspaces shown in unity-2d

Finally decided to set up a new user and see what was up. Have adjusted
title and descrip. to reflect

This is caused by unity-2d using the value for "num_workspaces" in
~/.gconf/apps/metacity/general which is dynamically set by gnome-shell
when exited

** Summary changed:

- If gnome-shell has been installed & logged into then only 1 workspace will be shown in Workspaces
+ gnome-shell writes to ~/.gconf/apps/metacity/general & affects Workspaces shown in unity-2d

** Description changed:

I mainly use unity (3d) but have noticed that at some point when trying unity-2d I can only see/access 1 workspace from "Workspaces"
- I'm not currently aware what settings change(s) in unity cause the folder ~/.gconf/apps/metacity to be created though could be tracked down
- I don't think that having an empty %gconf.xml in the parent dir. is uncommon, but in this case is certainly the culprit.
- If I remove it, log out/in then all 4 workspaces show up. If I return it then, log out/in then back to 1
- Currently in ~/.gconf/apps/metacity
- drwx------ 5 doug doug 4096 2011-08-13 22:30 .
- drwx------ 15 doug doug 4096 2011-08-13 22:24 ..
- -rw------- 1 doug doug 0 2011-08-06 21:28 %gconf.xml
- drwx------ 2 doug doug 4096 2011-08-13 17:17 general
- drwx------ 2 doug doug 4096 2011-08-13 17:10 global_keybindings
- drwx------ 2 doug doug 4096 2011-08-06 21:28 window_keybindings
+ It turns out that if one logs into gnome-shell, when exiting it writes to - ~/.gconf/apps/metacity/general
+ Typically it would do this, but the value used is based on workspaces open in GS when exiting
+ <entry name="num_workspaces" mtime="1313702896" type="int" value="1"/>
+
+ In the above case when logging into unity-2d only 1 workspace will be
+ shown
