  login with gdm fails. startx works

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gdm

  After an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 I can't login anymore with gdm. After i have entered the password, the screen goes blank and after few seconds gdm login is back.
  If I start in recovery mode from grub and login as my user and then launch startx everything works great. 

  I have a dual screen setup with ATI Radeon 2400 with proprietary
  driver.

  I have looked around in the logs but i haven't found anything
  interesting
