yeah that's the same issue i'm having, and it's really similar to the
upstream bug, banshee is 'really' slow to import a huge amount of music,
for me it's random: sometimes it crashes and other it just hang for
ever.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

  When trying to import a 13238 songs collection from the ~/Music folder
  into Banshee, it hangs using 3 CPUs of 4 on a i5 680 quad-core 3.6 GHz
  system.

  It imports fine until it reaches somewhere around 7000 songs, then it
  hangs for a few minutes turningf gray, it resumes until reaching 10893
  songs, then resumes again and keeps hanging occasionally, increasingly
  often. Most songs are ripped FLAC and OGA, with few MP3s.

  I am attaching two screenshots, running Natty (64 bit) with all
  updates.
