ran into the same issue.  removed from nopasswdlogin group so i could at
least graphically login:

sudo deluser <username> nopasswdlogin

Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gdm

  After wrestling with getting likewise-open to join my domain (joined,
  unjoined, uninstalled, reinstalled several times), I was able to join
  my domain successfully. I could login with domain credentials
  MYDOMAIN\username.

  However, It gives me an error getting into GDM:
  Could not update ICE authority file /home/likewise-open/MYDOMAIN/username/.ICEauthority
  also
  Problem with configuration server
  (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

  Any help would be appreciated.
