Title:
  Visible text beyond the maximum number of scrollback lines becomes
  unselectable

Status in “vte” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

  Text that you can see in gnome-terminal that's beyond the maximum
  number of scrollback lines can be visible but when you try to select
  it it disappears.

  Steps to reproduce:

   1. Set the maximum number of scrollback lines in the profile to 30 000
   2. Run perl -E 'printf "%7d\n", $_ for reverse 0 .. 300_000'
   3. While this is running but before it has reached 30 000 move the scrollbar so gnome-terminal stops scrolling with new output.
   4. Once there's >30 000 lines between the currently showed number and the currently outputted number you can select lines on the screen but they'll disappear once you select them
