Title:
Focus is mouse-dependent when using dual monitors despite
apps/metacity/general/focus_mode = click
Status in “metacity” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Binary package hint: metacity
BACKGROUND
- Hardware: Asus P5N32-SLI motherboard with two NVidia GeForce 7600GS video cards (and a monitor attached to each of them) and plain USB mouse
- Software: Ubuntu 10.10; nouveau (libdrm-nouveau1 version 2.4.21-1ubuntu2.1, xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20100805); GNOME 2.32.0; metacity 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu1.
- Metacity setting: apps/metacity/general/focus_mode = click (= System / Preferences / Windows / UNTICK "Select windows when the mouse moves over them")
- other info as per attached files
PROBLEM
- The dual monitors are configured as two X screens, out of necessity rather than desire (same configuration as described in my post to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/316514 ).
- Moving a mouse within a window doesn't move the focus (as you'd expect; the Metacity setting requires that you click on a window to activate it/give it the focus). This is good.
- Moving the mouse from one screen to the other moves the focus (from the "currently active" window in one screen to the "currently active" window in the other. This is the problem.
- This causes trouble (e.g. using the keyboard to delete a bunch of stuff from one application; accidentally knock the mouse a small distance sideways into the other screen; delete stuff from the wrong application by mistake).
- My feeling is that the mouse should be allowed to wander freely without the focus changing, until you click something.
- Am not wholly sure whether this is an xorg or a metacity bug (or a bug in the interface between the two).
If anybody knows a fix for this I'd love to hear it!
Many thanks,
Rudolf.
