My bad. Update to 2.6.38-11 hadn't trickled through to my grub (I've a
rather complex setup) and though that kernel was installed, it wasn't
booting - but I hadn't noticed until reviewing the (mistaken) bug
submission. I've fixed the grub setup and confirm that 2.6.38-11 is ok
regarding autostarting hidden wireless SSID network connection.

  Failed to autoconnect to hidden SSID wireless network

Bug description:
  #760015 is said to be fixed with kernel 2.6.38.10 (but I never tried
  that) but appears to have regressed in 2.6.38-11

  I have worked around the problem by copying /etc/NetworkManager
  /system-connections/MySSID from 10.10 (kernel 2.6.32-33), where
  autoconnect worked (eventually), to 11.04. (Note that adding
  autoconnect=true to the 11.04 version of this file did not fix the
  problem.)
