Thanks for the heads up.  Yes, I see that it works properly in
LibreOffice.  I guess we can close this one.

Jeffrey Panczyk, this issue is unreproducible in LibreOffice Calc. Does
this work for you? If using Lucid or Maverick feel free to perform at
the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa && sudo apt-get update &&
sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-calc

  Expectation:  Date values in drop downs should be shown as dates
  What happened:  Values were shown as integers

  Procedure:
  1) Create a new spreadsheet.
  2) Highlight Cells A1,A2, and A3.  Select Format->Cells, click Data, and Click OK
  3) Enter the following values in the following cells:
      A1: 1/1/2008
      A2: 1/2/2008
      A3: 1/3/2008
  4) Click on Cell A1.   Select Data->Validity.    Change Allow from "All Values" to "Cell range".  Put A2:A3 in the Source Field, and click OK.
  5) Click on the dropdown arrow beside cell A1.  The available values are printed as integers, where they should be shown in the proper date format.
