You should either install indicator-applet (which is recommended by
gnome-panel, indirectly) or manually add User Menu / Shutdown applets to
the panel (if for some reason you can't install extra packages).

  Gnome-flashback: No (easy) way to log out

Status in gnome-panel package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I just installed Ubuntu 14.10 and Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon fails
  (another issue) and starts Gnome-flashback as a fallback desktop.

  The default Gnome has only Applications and Places menu and no way to
  log out or restart the computer.

  Workaround is to start a terminal and reboot the computer from it.
