[Bug 1365126] Re: Screen "Shaking" Up & Down

Troy Greer, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
As per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-
netbooks/ideapad-n-series-laptops/ideapad-n580 an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (96). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
  Screen "Shaking" Up & Down

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Essentially, my graphics are usntable. The display moves up and down
rapidly in a flickering-like fashion whenever I turn on my Lenovo
IdeaPad N580 or wake it up from sleep mode. The shaking up and down
nearly stops after a few hours of running the laptop, only moving up
and down once every 1 or 2 seconds, so that I can still use the
laptop, but it still hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.

The problem began soon after wiping Windows 8 from the laptop an
installing Ubuntu 13.10. Recently, I finally got around to upgrading
to 14.04 LTS, but I had to create a boot flash drive because the
software updater wasn't working correctly at the time. Anyway, a fresh
install of 14.04 LTS fixed the problem for a few days, but it came
back again. I don't know if it's from one of the updates released,
since it was after updating all of the packages that needed updating,
or if it's just a conincidence that it wasn't happening.

It's a 64-bit laptop (Intel Sandybridge Mobile Graphics), so I
  replaced 64-bit Windows 8 with 64-bit Ubuntu. I can't help but wonder
if possibly using a fresh 32-bit install would fix this issue, as a
very undesired workaround, but I would much prefer a proper update or
a link to any drivers or packages that should be installed.
