After seeing what the editable dropdown *should* do, I agree.

Indeed, but I still worry that people will try using this for "quickly
adding accounts", which of course won't work.

Hmm, guess I'll have to see the proper interaction then. Right now I'm
still not convinced.

Err, I wasn't suggesting I did (I didn't give it any review flag), I'm
simply pointing out things you will want to fix before your next
version. The backend changes in this patch causes it to not apply,
that's all I was noting. :)

Yes, that works fine, so I wonder what's going on in Compose. The
dropdown in the compose window is styled pretty heavily after my compose
changes in bug 867166 and children. Perhaps that's related? What
platform have you tested this on? I'm surprised this issue wouldn't
appear on all platforms, since the styling is fairly consistent.

Yes, I agree we don't need to worry considerably, but it is worth
pointing out. For example, simply having it there may confuse innocent,
but naive, users who think they can use it to obtain whatever email they
want. They may not realize the issues with this, and the problems it
might cause later. I can see the bug already:

"Bug XXXXXX - I sent an email with a custom 'awesomeme@xxxxxx` address,
but when my friends try to email me at the address, it doesn't show up
in my Gmail account"

And that's when we're all whacking our heads on our desks. :)

Title:
Editing the "From" field for the current email only (as text, not
  dropdown)

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  Confirmed
Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: thunderbird

I want to quite often use a particular email address (e.g. for writing
to a mailing list), where I do not have added the email address to the
  account settings yet.

However, Thunderbird does not allow to edit the From field, but only
provides the configured email addresses in a dropdown.

It would be nice, if you could also edit the From field in a text
  input.

KMail provides this, for example, and there appear to be some
extensions for it, but I'd like to avoid using an addon for this, but
rather think it's a nice feature to have by default.

I could imagine, that the last entry in the dropdown would say
"Edit..." or "Custom..." and change the dropdown into a text field.
