To clarify previous comment: After giving me a hard time, fglrx did
install, but gave the same result as the open driver (i.e. color depth
was visibly less than 24bpp)

Title:
  Wrong color depth on Radeon HD 6770

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Graphics card is  Radeon HD 6770. X.Org drivers. Clean install, video
  works but color depth is < 24bpp. I tried adding DefaultDepth
  parameter on xorg.conf. Secondary card is integrated on the
  motherboard (Intel E3-1200 chipset). Delivers 24bpp right away, no
  tinkering required.
