Title:
Xorg freezes irrecoverably with "EQ overflowing"

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
X frequently freezes with "EQ overflowing" message(s) in the logs.
lightdm/X can be stopped and restarted, but never returns to a usable
state until rebooting. Either the screen remains black, or the input
  devices remain frozen.

This happens multiple times a day but can not be reliably reproduced.
Frequently, it will happen within minutes after booting up; other
times it seems to happen at times of high load / memory usage.
Sometimes the system remains working for hours, sometimes just for
  minutes.

The problem occurs both with the xserver-xorg-video-ati and fglrx
drivers from the standard repositories (+ backports, + updates, +
  security).

The system remains fully responsive via SSH, with seemingly no
  dangling processes after stopping X.

  Kernel 3.16.0-31-generic, amd64.
  Release utopic.
